Brian Morin and Stephen Cole met in 1983 as juniors in the fourth class of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, the first public boarding school focusing on science and math education. Opposing political views led us into intense debates, and so began an, um, interesting three decade friendship. We still disagree about politics, but somewhere during our late-night arguments we discovered that we actually agree about many things - including the value of high-quality educational content.
Stephen went on to get a BA in English from the University of North Carolina and an MBA from UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School. Stephen's career has focused on software, with stints at Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, and entrepreneurial companies in North Carolina. Stephen manages a custom software development company in Durham.
Brian is a materials scientist by training, and a serial inventor and entrepreneur by inclination. Brian holds a BS in Physics from the University of North Carolina, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the Ohio State University. Brian has amassed over 125 patents while at Dupont, Milliken, and companies that he founded.
Together, they've always been fascinated with knowledge and learning. Stephen can understand and retain volumes and volumes of information. Brian has a talent for breaking down difficult concepts into pieces even he can understand . Sknowflake is the culmination of a lifelong passion for learning and lifelong friendship that started at a small, experimental school where anything was game and learning was the goal.
